The Iowa Democratic Party is re-created anew every two years at
precinct caucuses. Pocahontas County has eleven precincts. The most
recent caucuses were held January 23, 2010. The next caucuses will be
held in 2012. All voters are eligible to attend. They must be
registered Democrats or must change their registration to Democrat at
the caucus.
Voters at the caucus select their leaders, called precinct
committeemen and committeewomen. (Most precincts have vacancies at the
precinct committee level. You may be appointed to a vacancy in your
precinct.) Precinct committee members select the county officers for
the Democratic Party's county central committee. At this time the
chair is Lois Jirgens of Laurens. Vice Chair is Marcia Leu of
Laurens. The committee secretary is Merry Crotty of Havelock. The
treasurer is Jim Bartosh of Pocahontas.
Voters at the caucus also elect delegates to the subsequent county conventions. The
next county conventions will be March 13, 2010. The public is invited
to attend as observers. In 2012 these delegates will be selected based on their preference for Presidential candidates.
